Here is my third blog post regarding getting paid and again I must give credit to the article, “How to Collect from Anyone (Even Enron)” found in Inc. Magazine.
Way to get paid #3: Remain Calm. The week before last, my blog was about paying a visit on your customer in order to collect on a bill. Last week it was about bringing backup documentation for your visit. This week the message is Remain Calm! Let’s go back to last week for a moment. Imagine if you did not bring backup documentation with you when you called upon your customer. Instead of having something in writing to work from, everything would have been limited to an exchange of words. A comment from your customer like, “There is no way I owe that much money” would have sent you through the roof wouldn’t it? Even if you have the evidence in hand, you need to remain calm. You have to be dispassionate and unemotional about the whole thing. Don’t raise your voice. Don’t make it personal. It won’t get you anywhere. It will only result in both of you getting hot tempered and less in agreement than when you started.
“The ideal leader is disciplined and calm in the midst of chaos. The ultimate skill is to separate oneself from the stresses of everyday life.” — from The Art of War by Sun Tzu.
